After taking away a CAM-AM 500cc 4-wheeler bike from the Hooked on Boars Boar Slaying Super Comp, he does not need to any longer. He was the big winner at Sunday’s weigh-in, and organiser Lisa Willis says the event was a great success. “The day was fantastic. Matt (Willis, Lisa’s husband) and I really enjoyed doing it, and we enjoyed seeing families having a good time.” About 300 people came through the gates, a number Lisa says exceeded their expectations. She says moving the event from the Giesen Centre to the Waterlea Racecourse was also a positive step. “The racecourse is a brilliant venue. We had so much feedback saying people had fun. “We try and make it a fun family day.” Lisa says they are looking to run next year’s event on a larger scale, now they have the pefrect venue. About $200 was raised on the gate for six-yearold Renwick School student Honor Hocquard, who has been diagnosed with Cyclin Dependent Kinase-Like 5, a rare genetic disorder. The money is being put towards a vehicle fitted with a suitable wheelchair hoist. Other prize-winners included Ryan Nesbit, who 70.4 kilogram boar was the heaviest caught, Amelia Pillans, who caught a 1.69kg rabbit in the children’s division, and Thomas Brydon, whose possum was the heaviest at 4.87kg.

PJ continues to fight By Jacob Page Former Marlborough Boys’ College head boy, PJ Lupi appears to be making progress in his recovery from a scooter accident in Phuket last week. Until then his family will “wait patiently” for this to happen. “There is no telling when he will wake but rest assured, we will let people know immediately when it does.” PJ was moved to a private hospital at a cost of $6000 a day, and did not have travel insurance. When PJ is well enough it is hoped he can be transported back to New Zealand at a cost of $90,000. No set timeframe has been set for that.

Brass band all class at nationals By Adam Poulopoulos It has been a big week for the Marlborough District Brass Band, with their junior ensemble the best of their strong results at the Brass Band Association of New Zealand National Championships. The eight-piece ensemble took first in their field at the championships, held in Rotorua between Wednesday and Sunday last week. They were not the only ones to win their division, with Mike Ford winning the masters event, and placing second in the open tenor horn. Clyde Dixon was second in the flugelhorn, Jonty Zydenbos second in the under-15 cornet, and the junior quartet placed third. The groups came together to finish third in the street march. Band musical director Kevin Moseley says he is happy with the results. He says the street march in

Assault charge A 23-year-old man will appear in the Blenheim District Court later this month on charges of assault with intent to injure. The appearance relates to an incident which saw a man have his jaw broken on Saturday, July 3. He will appear on July 20.

Crash victim named A Blenheim man who died in a collision between a van and a trailer near Clarence on Thursday has been named. He was William Gordon McCallum, 77. A serious crash investigation has been opened to determine the cause of the accident.

Work is underway to identify the options for Havelock’s future water supply. Councillors allocated funding for an upgrade to the township’s water supply in council’s Long Term Plan in the wake of concerns about saltwater levels and summer water restrictions. A preliminary report from specialist water engineers has confirmed Havelock’s salinity issue is caused by the seawater intruding into the shallow aquifer, which is the source of the town supply. The St Marks Charitable Foundation now needs to be registered under the Charities and Charitable Trusts Acts. Rooney says the findings of this research would be reported back to the Havelock Water User Group in a few months’ time.

Fence posts for Wanganui By Adam Poulopoulos Blenheim Rotary has coordinated an initiative sending 4000 excess fence posts to Wanganui to help flood-stricken farmers. Recently about 2000 posts were loaded into a 20-foot container at Marisco Vineyard in Fairhall, before being shipped up to Wanganui. Wanganui farmers said they still had demand for the posts, so the same amount was loaded again on Saturday. Rotarians were helped by about a dozen community service participants on the project. Project coordinator Ron Perano says the

posts are “desperately needed” in Wanganui, which was hit by flooding and slips last month. “A lot of farmers lost their fencing in the flood, and they can’t control their stock. “I have heard the situation is extremely bad.” Blenheim Rotary have been lent a hand by Mainfreight, KiwiRail, PGG Wrightson and Hirepool, who have all offered their services at a free or heavily discounted rate. “Without them we couldn’t do it,” Ron says. “If we had to pay for a 20-foot container to get across the Cook Strait and for the truck to get up there, I’m not sure what it would cost.”

Rec fishers want consistent blue cod rules The Marlborough Recreational Fishers Association wants consistent rules for the blue cod fishery across the top of the South Island. In a submission to the Ministry of Primary Industries on proposals for management of the Marlborough Sounds blue cod fishery, the association has called for abolition of the slot and transit rules and the reintroduction of a 30 centimetre minimum size limit and a three fish bag limit, which would complement the size and bag limits for Nelson recreational fishers. “We want consistency across the Top of the South” says current chairman Peter Watson. Currently Nelson have a three fish blue cod limit and 30 cms. “It makes sense to have the same to avoid any confusion and makes compliance work much easier for the ministry,” he says.

Pastor at the pump Pastor Paul Fletcher pumps gas during the day and preaches the value of God in his spare time. He chats with reporter Jacob Page about how his time away from church in his teenage years has helped mould him into the man he is today, the importance of empathy and how today’s world responds to the message of Christianity. Paul ‘Fletch’ Fletcher believes there is always a way to get the message of God through to people, you just have to be creative.

Paul ’Fletch’ Fletcher is not your stereotypical looking pastor and he is happy to embrace that. He’s just as comfortable on the back of a motorbike as he is in front of a congregation. He was brought up with religion as a child and attended church services and Sunday School before walking away at 13 to experience life on his own, returning to the faith when he married in his late 20s. It is those years in between he believes has made him empathetic to people’s issues. “Everybody is looking for something and often when they come to a church they are looking to be a part of something whether it is a family or just a close circle of friends for support.”

Paul says people are often guilty of putting themselves down which in turn makes things harder in life. “We’ve all had those moments where we get frustrated with ourselves and say things like ‘oh you silly so and so’ and that’s not really productive. “I’ve done some silly things in my heyday, drank too much alcohol and experimented with drugs and that’s helped me understand the struggles of some of the people I see. “I was a party animal, had fallen relationships and wasn’t helping myself and that’s what happens when you base your life around superficial things. “When I walked away at 13, I wanted to test the world and see what it was all about and I see it a lot with young people today

that there is a lot of hurt involved in that. “Christianity and church has been put on the back-burner for ages because of the way society works now – there is no such thing as a normal weekend anymore. “We have to move with the times.” After 18 years as a pastor, Paul and his wife decided to go out on their own and establish Encounter Ministries. “It was scary; there was a little doubt that creeps in about going it alone. “If you want to see things change in your life, sometimes you have to step out on your own and make it happen.” Paul says two key aspects are love and relationships. “It’s about fixing the inside and making people happy day-to-day.

“Being a Christian is a lifestyle… We are all on a path in life and I’m just trying to become the best version of myself. “There are so many people out there wanting help… They’ll go into relationships, they’ll go to psychics.” Paul says he has run youth groups in Marlborough for five years and says there is a desire for relationships in life. Paul has invited his mentor, former Marlborough pastor and current Dream International senior leader Aaron Salisbury, to come over from Brisbane along with colleague Steve Harris to run services this Sunday at Blenheim Musical Theatre on Lakings Road. The services called ‘Divine Encounter’ will run at 10am and 7pm.

Two new radio stations for Blenheim Radio station announcers will visit Blenheim later this month to connect with local supporters who helped bring Life FM and Rhema to the region. A meet-and-greet ceremony with local youth will be held at The Elim Centre on the evening of July 22, and a launch ceremony will be held at Raupo café from 8am the next morning. Rhema Media currently operates three network radio stations, Life FM, Rhema and Star across the country, but have not had an FM presence in Blenheim until now. With help from listeners and supporters in Blenheim and around the country two new FM frequencies in Blenheim were purchased. There is great excitement at bringing both

Life FM and Rhema stations to Blenheim on 93.7FM and 104.1FM respectively. Rhema Media chief executive Mike Brewer says he remembers the passion from Blenheim locals from a 2013 nationwide tour. “When visiting Blenheim I was impressed with the turnout from the local community for Rhema Media and their strong desire for our radio brands to broadcast locally.” “At that time we had no firm plans for the introduction of new frequencies, but I am in no doubt that the prayer and passion of this community has made this extraordinary event possible. “We are very excited to be launching not one, but two FM frequencies in the Blenheim region.”

Kangatraining classes starting in Blenheim By Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim woman Alison Dight has returned home from Perth, and with her an exciting new fitness class for mums - Kangatraining Marlborough. In Perth, Alison worked as a trained counsellor at a pregnancy crisis centre with teenage mothers. After having two children, James (5) and Oliver (8months) via caesarian sections, experiencing post natal anxiety and depression, she found value both physically and mentally with Kangatraining. “It has been great for me, especially the mental side of things, and I really believe it has great benefits,” she says. Alison is trained in post natal fitness and has learned alot about birth types and their consequences and how they impact on fitness, and is one of few Kangatraining instructors in New Zealand. “As an instructor I am fully certified, having completed training in post natal exercise in New Plymouth, first aid certifications, and exams in anatomy, post natal health, and babywearing safety.

“Many fitness classes can be dangerous for mothers in the first year after birth and while breastfeeding, so with Kangatraining I am passionate about helping mothers learn to achieve their best health in a safe way.” With Kangatraining, it is encouraged to bring your babies and women are welcome to bring their own carriers, or hire one for each class. “Unlike traditional exercise classes you don’t need to worry about finding a babysitter or minding an unsettled baby during class, because your little one is worn on you and is part of the fun,” she says. One thing Alison advises is that women need to have passed their six week post natal check up with their midwives before they start. Kangatraining Marlborough begins a new term on July 29 and is held at the Redwoodtown Hall, Blenheim. There will be 14 blushing brides taking the stage in all their bridal beauty in what organisers say will be a fun and memorable show for all. Behind the scenes a committee has been working hard for months to bring together all the elements of the show, from the many donated prizes through to the venue set up. Committee member Noeline Stewart says the generosity of Marlborough businesses has been “overwhelming”. “Businesses have been hugely generous and we are blown away with what has been donated. “The brides are in for a treat,” she says. The first place bride will walk away with prizes totalling $2500, including cash, travel vouchers, a limousine ride, a Citizen watch from McCormick & Co, pharmacy gifts and lingerie vouchers to name a few. Other prizes that will be given to the winning brides include homewares, beauty products, gorgeous gift baskets, vouchers plus much more. Heating Marlborough owner Peter Cairns says although it’s July, it’s not too late have wood burners serviced to ensure they are safe and in good working order. This includes having the flu cleaned. “You might have your flu cleaned prior to winter, then half way through your fire gets sluggish and smokey again. “This is normal, sometimes a fire needs to be cleaned twice a year,” he says. When it comes to servicing, Pete’s advice is; “Don’t leave it until it’s too late.” “There are still a lot of old fires out there and these don’t last forever. Depending on how hard you burn wood they will start showing wear and tear, even new ones, this is why maintenance is important. “You never know how long a box or flu will last, and this can be dangerous to you and your family if not checked.” There are new wood burner options avail-

Life flight trust This year’s Westpac Chopper Appeal has raised $248,582 for the Life Flight Trust and the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust. This is part of $1,535,454 raised across the country. All donations from the Westpac Chopper Appeal are distributed back to the 16 rescue helicopter services across the country, meaning money raised locally stays local.

Rural women entries open Entries have opened for the 2015 Enterprising Rural Women Awards, offering women who run their own rural businesses the opportunity to boost their profiles and gain recognition for their achievements. To enter the awards, women have to own and operate a small business with less than 10 full time equivalent staff, based in a rural area. The business must have been running for at least two years. If in partnership, women must be an active partner of 50 per cent or more in the business. Entries close on September 18. The awards will be presented at the Rural Women NZ national conference in Nelson on November 21.

More water, less coffee Firstly I must admit that trying to start a healthy journey in winter is more difficult than it sounds. All I want to do is rug up and keep warm, not get outside walking. So there have been a couple of evenings where I have donned my walking shoes, put the dog on his leash and headed out into the chilly evening air, only to retreat back to the warmth. In saying that, I have learned many great yoga techniques and have my lunges, stretches and squats that I have been able to do from the comfort of my lounge. My biggest challenge this past fortnight has been experimenting with different foods which is probably the reason why I have lost less than 1kg this time around. After meeting with my coach Jane Butler last week, she urged me to turn my focus to my hydration, making sure I am drinking my eight glasses of water throughout the day. This has also encouraged me to cut down my coffee intake. I am proud of my efforts to kick a habit I thought I couldn’t live without, and am only having one a day whether that be at home or my favourite Dolce mochaccino. I began my courtship with coffee when I began juggling work commitments with my young children. Both my children were five months old when I returned to work, so when you are working a full day but only had three hours sleep, coffee is your best friend. that the caffeinated adrenaline rushes I had used to replace healthy, regular meals is no longer sustainable. The 3pm ‘crash’ where you want to crawl under your desk and sleep is long gone since starting this journey, and instead I annoy my co-workers with the constant crinkling of rice cracker packets in between meals. On another note, personal trainer Emma Burrell put me onto a website called Virtuagym Online Fitness. I am still learning to use it, but it helps you to track your fitness, eating, and calorie intake in a really educational way. Check it out!

MacKenzie rows to gold in Lucerne Blenheim-born rower Sophie MacKenzie added another gold medal to her collection at the Rowing World Cup in Lucerne over the weekend. The Wairau Rowing Club rower and crew-mate Julia Edward won gold in the women’s lightweight double sculls in six minutes and 55 seconds, about a second and a half quicker than nearest challengers South Africa. The pair also took their heat and semi-final races earlier in the regatta. MacKenzie and Edward took gold after having to settle for silver in the previous World Cup regatta at Varese last month. The British crew of Charlotte Taylor and Katherine Copeland who took out that race could only get fourth on this

occasion. The reigning Marlborough Sportsperson of the Year, MacKenzie was not the only local to get on the podium. Karl Manson was part of the men’s quadruple sculls crew which took silver, while Blenheim Rowing Club representative Tom Murray and his men’s eight crew took bronze in their final. Karl’s twin brother Robbie Manson and fellow crew member Chris Harris finished sixth in the men’s double sculls final. They were handily placed heading into the second half of the race, but ‘caught a crab’ later in the race. Overall, New Zealand crews secured 11 medals at the regatta – six gold, three Sophie MacKenzie and Julia Edward after their race. silver and two bronze.

Smit selected for torch run A Blenheim athlete will join a special club after being chosen to carry the official Special Olympics World Games torch. Dale Smit will serve as a guardian of the Flame of Hope and participate in the law enforcement torch run final leg, the last journey of the flame throughout the state of California later this month. Smit was selected by Special Olympics New Zealand to be one of the 126 final leg team

members. Smit lives in Blenheim and is an active member of Special Olympics Marlborough. He is an avid runner, having competed at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai in 2007. He won a gold medal in a 10 kilometre event and bronze in the half marathon. He has been a Special Olympics global messenger since 2010. Ten Special Olympics athletes from around the world have been

selected to run alongside over 100 law enforcement personnel, to raise awareness throughout California of the games being held in Los Angeles. On May 14 the flame was lit at the Pnyx, a sacred hill near the Acropolis in Athens. The torch was lit by the sun’s rays, and will remain lit until the end of the Games on August 2. After the official lighting, the flame began its journey through all 50 states as a part of the

historic Special Olympics unified relay across America. After the unified relay the Flame of Hope will be handed over to the 2015 Los Angeles final leg team, where it will travel for 17 days to more than 125 cities and towns throughout California. The Flame of Hope will complete its journey on July 25, when the law enforcement torch run final leg team carries it into the World Games opening ceremony.

Marlborough underwater hockey champions The Marlborough Underwater Hockey Club has won the C Grade competition at the National Underwater Hockey Championships in Wellington over the weekend. The two-day tournament saw the team compete and win seven out of seven games against experienced teams from around the country. With four novice players under the age of 14 and three ex-New Zealand players Bruno Brosnan, Rebecca Brosnan and Jason Pacey, the team of nine succeeded in winning the C Grade competition.
